Uni Advice: Part One Of Many (Potentially)
Now last time I tried to write a uni advice type of
post ended up getting all soppy about my mum but not this time. This time I'm
serious decided to switch it up and write at 3pm like a normal human.
I’ve realised there is so much I wish I knew before so,
here's things I wish I knew before I started packing for uni.
First thing's first, you don't need to bring all of
your clothes to uni. Now I watched Youtube uni advice videos, read tweets and
even asked people older than me and they all said the same thing. But did I
listen, no. To explain myself like most people my age I only had experience
packing for a specific trip. For example holiday = bikinis, shorts, sandals;
Duke of Edinburgh Award = walking boots, tracksuits etc. Now uni meant what? I
had no idea. So in typical Jade fashion I went for the 'go hard or go home'
approach and packed everything. From bikinis to winter coats to wellies to flip
flops, I was determined to be prepared. To be clear uni consists of three main
activities: lectures, nights out and hobbies/societies, and none of these
required a bikini. This is just to show you that I understand the need to feel
extra prepared but honestly if any of the nothing items can't be worn in at
least one of the three activists at uni then leave it at home. It's a waste of
space and makes unpacking your room longer than it needs to be.
Secondly, bring a suitcase, a normal sized one.
Something you can easily carry in case your parents don't pick you up from uni
every time you decide to come home.
Thirdly, find out what comes as part of your accommodation.
Last year I bought a toaster, a kettle, a toilet brush, and toilet bin and a
waste paper bin because I didn’t know they already came with my accommodation.
So read what you get to avoid buying and packing things you don’t need.
Finally, remember you can buy things when you get to
uni. Now this depends on where your uni is. If your uni is in a major city or
at least close to a city then a lot of things you can buy there, such as
toiletries, kitchen paper, toilet roll, groceries etc. If your uni is in remote
location still don’t worry you can do online shopping. My point is that even
though you’re moving away from home doesn’t mean that you’re moving to another
planet, they’ll have shops where your uni is. However, for all my people of
colour find out how multicultural your new area is. Do you have easy access to
your specific hair products? Do you have easy access to traditional food
ingredients?
If not then STOCK UP!! Grab as many black soaps, and
eco styler that you can because it’s little things like that that’ll make you
miss home.
Yeah that’s it, if you want me to continue this like a
mini series DM me on my socials and let me know.
Anyway yeah bye.
